# Update Chain Metadata in Polkadot Vault

Due to the fact that your **Polkadot Vault Device** is always offline and is air-gapped, there is a unique system in which you must partake to update the chain metadata so that your transactions are valid. You can use the [Novasama Technologies Metadata Portal](https://metadata.novasama.io/#/polkadot) to find QR codes which will provide your **Polkadot Vault Device** with the information required to update the chain metadata.

{% hint style="warning" %}
The following steps need to be carried out on your **Polkadot Vault Device**.
{% endhint %}

1. Navigate to the [Novasama Technologies Metadata Portal](https://metadata.novasama.io/#/polkadot). Note: this should be done on a device which is **not** your Polkadot Vault device.
2. On the metadata portal, `select` the **blockchain** that you wish to update the metadata for.
3. If you are adding a chain for the first time, `select` the **Chain Specs** tab at the top of the metadata portal screen.
4. Using your Polkadot Vault device, `select` the **QR code scanner**.
5. Scan the **Chain specs QR code** with your Polkadot Vault device.
6. Review the verifier certificate and then `select` **Approve** at the bottom of the screen on your Polkadot Vault device.
7. `Select` the **Metadata** tab at the top of the metadata portal screen.
8. Using your Polkadot Vault device, `select` the **QR code scanner**.
9. Scan the **Metadata QR code** with your Polkadot Vault device. Note: this can take a few minutes to complete.
10. Review the verifier certificate and `select` **Approve**.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.novawallet.io/nova-wallet-wiki/wallet-management/hardware-wallets/polkadot-vault/update-chain-metadata-in-polkadot-vault.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
